Artist Spotlight: Shima Shanti

Shima Shanti -Peace Waters, San Diego, CA

Peace Waters encaustic artist and inspired writer Shima Shanti delights in the creative process sharing the expression of Spirit in her encaustic paintings and published books. For Shima creativity is an open-eye meditation where the Spirit of play expresses itself through beeswax and brushes, pigment and hot plates. Shima’s artwork inspires the Spirit of creativity uniquely within each of us.

Describe your work.
Shima is passionate about the elemental and unpredictable qualities of encaustic painting, an ancient art form consisting of beeswax, pigment, and resin. Once heated, the molten wax can be poured, textured, scraped, carved, collaged, or polished to a high gloss. Inspired by nature, spirituality, and the expressive power of color and texture she combines collage, reclaimed materials and assemblage into original works of art in unique and compelling ways.

How did you get started in the crafts business?
Creativity pulses through Shima—as a former corporate executive specializing in product development or writer and published author—and now encaustic artist. On a whim in 2016, while taking a break from the focused efforts of publishing Shima participated in an encaustic workshop which charted a new course and propelled Shima into the world of art.
  
How long have you been wholesaling?
Shima's full-time artist's career was launched in November of 2016. In this short time Shima's works have been accepted into 15 national juried shows and featured in close to one hundred retail stores, galleries and boutiques.
 
What percentage of your business is Wholesale? Retail? Commission, etc.?
Shima sells almost exclusively to the wholesale trade. She values the few select galleries in Montana, Oregon and Southern California who currently represent her work on commission and is always grateful for the opportunity for new galleries to discover her. And, she appreciates the few individuals who find her on the peacewaters.com website.
  
What are your top 3 marketing methods for reaching new buyers?
Shima's single most important marketing method is personal. It's relationship, flexibility and support. It's partnering with stores, galleries and individuals as friends and colleagues. Along with being accessible and personal, peacewaters.com online presence, IndieMe online wholesale buyers portal, participation at national and regional trade shows, and building a nationwide sales rep team rounds out Shima's marketing and sales strategy.

What advice do you have for new craft artists?
An Artist is the conduit for Spirit to flow through. Show up, do the work, and remain unattached to the outcome. Embrace every aspect as part of the creative process whether it be the excitement of making art, or the necessary activities of marketing and selling; and even the more mundane tasks of accounting, shipping and receiving. It's all part of the process. Continue to be inspired by other artists’ work. Visit galleries, attend shows, submit your work to juried exhibitions. Be active in the art community and flow power to whose power you depend. Success come of its volition when there is no expectation to the outcome. Create! Create! Create!
  
What advice do you have for new craft galleries?
Let the Artist support YOU! Artists inspire potential buyers. They know how to sell their artwork. Call on them. ASK! Artists are generous by nature and love to support those who see something in their work. Ask them to donate for causes dear to you. Host events featuring the Artist with refreshments and raffles. Treat Artists as your partners. Mutual success benefits All.
