16 April Artist Spotlight: Out of the Woods April 16, 2018 By Jackie Adamany Artist Spotlight, News & Spotlights sylvia grantins, out of the woods 0 Sylvia Grantins, Virginiatown, ON I am Sylvia Grantins. I live in the northern part of Ontario, Canada. My little village is the perfect place for an artist to live. I gain my inspiration from these woods, lakes, and nature that I am fortunate to be able to enjoy. Describe Your Work: I make acrylic paintings in sizes ranging from 1.5" diameter up to 36" x 36". How did you get started in the crafts business? I was born into it. My Dad was trained as a furniture maker, and he later went into woodcarving. He made birds, fish, and animals out of exotic woods. My Mother trained at art school and is also a painter. I grew up helping them at craft shows and trade shows. How long have you been wholesaling? Close to 20 years! What are your top 3 marketing methods for reaching new buyers? I am learning new methods to reach buyers as we speak. I have started searching them out on Facebook, and web-pages. Stores that look as if my work fits in get a sample sent to them. I used to do more trade shows, but they are very expensive so I am making use of the internet as much as can. What percentage of your business is Wholesale? Retail? Commission, etc.? 95% wholesale. 5% retail. 5% commissions. Math skills 0%. How has IndieMe helped your business? IndieMe has helped me find a few new customers in the U.S. What advice do you have for new craft artists? Ask your peers for advice, we are a helpful bunch. Work hard. It takes more than a regular work-week to make it. Be positive. Don't let a bad show, or a bad year get you down, things can turn a corner like that. Make your product so good and delightful that no one can resist it. What advice do you have for new craft galleries? Buy from me! I'm not sure how to answer that, being on this side of the business.
