Residing in the beautiful OKANAGAN VALLEY of British Columbia, Canada Christine guides her small team of talented artisans through the design, hand painting and packaging process of making a thoughtful and beautiful line of fridge magnets. Christine is raising a 9 year old daughter with special needs and finds the home based business a perfect way to be a parent and make a living being creative at the same time.

Describe Your Work

At EACHANORIGINAL we make a luscious, hand painted, tactile and beautiful porcelain tile magnet collection that makes everyone who purchases them feel happy. They are a fabulous gift item as well.

How did you get started in the crafts business?

My company was founded over 20 years ago as an outlet to allow me to paint and be creative and make a living doing so. I was trained as a teacher and kept pursuing design and fine art opportunities outside of my work. Ultimately it made the most sense to make my creative outlet my life. I have not regretted that decision for one minute.

What are your top 3 marketing methods for reaching new buyers?

Advertising through Indie Me and a couple other select trade magazines. We have a strong website that also brings us customers. We have also begun to explore the power of Instagram. I presently do not attend tradeshows but they really are a good way to meet new buyers.

How long have you been wholesaling?

We have been wholesaling from inception 1999. I started on a consignment basis in a local store and when the idea took off, I researched the wholesale tradeshow opportunities out there for handmade products. Wholesale and the relationships with my stores are integral to my company.

How has IndieMe helped your business?

Indie Me provides all of the best marketing options. They have a strong wholesale website platform that retailers can order directly from. Indie Me's Buyer’s Guide and email based digital guides continue to be a strong form of marketing for us. I love that every opportunity to market yourself is available through Indie Me. What percentage of your business is Wholesale? Retail? Commission, etc.?

85% wholesale, 15% retail and that is through our website.

What advice do you have for new craft artists?

It is always challenging to start out as a craft/artisan. Having the ability to be creative and design products is wonderful but there is much more to running a business. Understanding your margins and costs (paying yourself a fair wage), managing supply and demand. Preparing for tradeshows and maintaining good communication with new and existing customers is vital. Be prepared to be all in. That is the only way to go. Be passionate about your product and ultimately you will see the rewards of your efforts.

What advice do you have for new craft galleries?

We have been doing business with many craft galleries over the years. The trend to BUY AMERICAN and BUY CANADIAN is real. There is so much more to a handmade product and the customers do love your story as well as the producer/maker.
