Artist Spotlight: Windsparrow Studio

Windsparrow Studio offers hand carved block prints for home, garden, and personal adornment. Our original images are carved into linoleum blocks and individually printed onto scarves, headbands, flag sets, and other lovely things.

Describe Your Work

Windsparrow Studio products are all designed, and hand printed in our studio overlooking the mountains and water of the beautiful Pacific Northwest. All offerings are individually printed using a relief printing technique known as block printing. Block printing is one of the oldest types of printmaking and has been around for thousands of years. An image is carved into a block (I use linoleum) and then printed by hand. Each time a print is made, the block must be inked and then pressed, so every single print is unique. This technique lends itself beautifully to creating strong, graphic prints with a real sense of the hand of the artist behind the work.

How did you get started in the crafts business?

I was raised in Vermont, and after college moved to the Pacific Northwest and started an organic flower farm. In the summertime I created beautiful bouquets, and during the long, rainy winters I learned to make prints. Now, I’m a full-time artist, creating designs, carving blocks, and printing pretty things to send out into the world. I love it! My work is inspired by my flowers, my kitchen garden, and the wildlife surrounding my family’s home in Washington State.

How long have you been wholesaling?

10 years.

What percentage of your business is Wholesale? Retail? Commission, etc.?

Wholesale is 95%. I do some retail via Etsy and occasionally a holiday sale or 2.

What are your top 3 marketing methods for reaching new buyers?

1.Keeping my online offerings up to date with great photos and regular new items. 2.Old fashioned POSTCARDS!! I have an ongoing list of amazing shops that inspire me, and I like to send out beautiful, inspiring postcards as a way to introduce myself. 3.I regularly purchase the Featured Item online ad, I do find this keeps me more visible to buyers.

How has IndieMe helped your business?

I've been with IndieMe since I began offering wholesale! I am on other platforms as well, but I find that buyers via IndieMe are the most consistent, long-term, serious buyers I have. I can build real relationships with the buyers, which is something I love. And, IndieMe is always so available to help with any problem. I appreciate that.
